Gallery
Since its founding in 1981, FOTOHOF has been Salzburg’s centre for artistic photography. Besides the exhibitions in the gallery in Lehen, its programme includes one of Austria’s most extensive specialist photography libraries, an internationally active photobook publisher, an archive of historical and contemporary photography, international touring exhibitions, and workshops and talks.
Exhibitions
FOTOHOF shows around ten exhibitions a year. Depending on the show, FOTOHOF>STUDIO can be closed off as a separate space; the library’s neighbouring exhibition room is devoted to the photobook. National and international touring exhibitions, for example on the estate of Inge Morath, complete the programme. The FOTOHOF team decides the annual programme together. Alongside prominent international artists, almost every important contemporary Austrian photographic artist has shown here.
Collaborations
FOTOHOF works continuously with Austrian and international photography institutions, recently including CFA Berlin, Gwinzegal, Fotogalerie Wien and Photomuseum Ireland. We regularly invite external curators to bring exhibition projects to Salzburg.
Guided tours
Our education team offers guided exhibition visits and short workshops for school classes and groups on request. Tours with the artists are announced in our news, on social media and in the newsletter. Free public tours take place regularly as part of “Lehen Sehen”.
Edition
FOTOHOF has published catalogues and books by Austrian and international photographic artists since it was founded; in 1999 this grew into a publishing house with international distribution. The around 360 titles of FOTOHOF>EDITION are available in bookshops and our online shop and are presented at international festivals and book fairs, for example in Amsterdam, Arles, Leipzig and Vienna.
With many of the artists we publish and exhibit, we also produce editions of original photographs – signed and numbered, as portfolios or as single prints accompanying a book.
Publishing profile
The focus is the monographic photobook as an artistic form in its own right, complemented by group catalogues and theory. Together, the programme offers a representative overview of contemporary artistic photography in Austria and beyond. Photo history is the subject of the volumes by Photoinstitut Bonartes, our exclusive partner, and since 2019 of the in-house FOTOHOF>ARCHIV series. FOTOHOF>EDITION is also the publishing partner of many museums and institutions, including Salzburg Museum, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Theatermuseum Wien, MAK Vienna and INN SITU Innsbruck.
Library
The specialist library holds around 16,000 books and catalogues and is continually expanded – one of Austria’s most extensive libraries of photography and media art after 1945. Around 20 international art and photography magazines are on subscription.

Using the library
Use is free of charge. As a reference library we don’t lend books or magazines – so every publication is always available on site. All books and magazine articles are listed in the online catalogue; two research workstations with internet access are available on site. For longer research projects or teaching we are happy to set up reserved shelves. Copies and reproductions for research purposes are possible.
Structure
The collection is organised into subject groups: monographs (I+II), anthologies (III), history and theory (IV), technique and how-to (V), special publications (VI), cultural policy (VII), auction catalogues (VIII) and media art (X). Shelf marks combine the subject group, the first three letters of the name or title and a running number (e.g. II Ger 4).
A special feature: individual magazine articles are catalogued too, marked with a leading Z. Exhibition catalogues, often small in format, are kept in slipcases and marked K (e.g. K III Por 7). Books marked H are shelved separately – please ask our staff.
Magazines
On current subscription or with extensive back issues: Aperture, Archivio, Bilder, Camera Austria, C/O Vienna, Dérive, Der Greif, Die Nacht, Eikon, ETC. Magazine, European Photography, Eyemazing, Flash Art, FOAM, Fotogeschichte, Fotograf, Frame, Gomma, Imago, Katalog, Kunst Bulletin, Kunstforum, Kunstquartal, Kunsttermine, Kulturrisse, Kursiv, Next Level, Parkett, Parnass, Photobook Review, Photographie Internationale, Photopaper, Photofile, Photoresearch, Photonews, Photoworks, Portfolio, Quart, Salz, Sioseh, Source, Spike, Springerin, Stern Spezial, Sterz, Texte zur Kunst, Umbau.
Archive
FOTOHOF>ARCHIV opened in April 2015 and holds mainly works by Austrian as well as selected international artists – prints, negatives, slides, digital data and documents that trace each artist’s development. It sees itself as a “working archive”: besides storage in climate-controlled cold rooms, it covers the entire workflow of a photographic production.
The archive rooms
The reproduction room produces copies and high-resolution scans of negatives and slides; in the workroom images are edited digitally and exhibition prints and facsimiles are made. An analogue darkroom allows black-and-white film processing and printing. In the presentation room, with direct access to one of the cold rooms, curators review and arrange archive material, and small courses take place. The document room gathers books and documents on the archive’s artists and on FOTOHOF’s exhibition history. An adjoining apartment is available to curators and researchers.
Online
The archive website offers free access to a representative selection of images, documents on FOTOHOF’s exhibition history, and information and interview films on the artists; further images and metadata are password-protected. To use the archive on site, please get in touch.

Workshops
Our educational work centres on sharpening personal perception. Looking at and analysing works by important photographers makes strategies of image-making, composition and the handling of light and technique conscious – and then puts them into practice. At the heart of every course is the participants’ own photographic practice, led by artists.
School classes can book tours and short workshops on artistic photography; individuals can take two-day beginner and advanced courses as well as year-long courses. Seminars led by external specialists cover technical aspects of the medium, such as identifying historical photographs and conserving photographic materials.
